Building firm-specific advantages in multinational corporations: the role of subsidiary initiative

Article Abstract:

A research was conducted to examine how subsidiary firms are able to contribute to the firm-specific advantages of multinational corporations (MNC). The determinants of the contributory role of the subsidiary and subsidiary initiative were also studied to establish research propositions. Several factors led to the transformation of subsidiary resources into part of the firm-specific advantage of MNCs. These factors were related to the transfer of resources, acceptance of the subsidiary's specialized resources in other parts of the MNC, and value of resources. Results showed that MNC subsidiaries significantly contributed to the firm-specific advantage creation process. They also indicated that initiative played a critical role in the early stages of contributory role development than in its subsequent growth.
