Chrysler, an all-American icon, takes flak for D-B's Nazi role

Article Abstract:

Chrysler Corp. is being criticized for selling out to Daimler-Benz AG, which played a critical industrial role in Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Critics say the deal is ironic considering that Chrysler recovered from near bankruptcy in the early 1980s with the help of "Buy American" rhetoric from its charismatic former chairman Lee Iacocca. Chrysler CEO Robert Eaton, however, said he is aware that some members of the Jewish community are opposed to the deal, but he believes that this would not have a significatn dent on the merger's sales. It also helps that Daimler-Benz has not run away from its past, but has even made some effort to recompense its victims.

GE's Welch takes PR hit

Article Abstract:

General Electric Co CEO Jack Welch is blasted for his obsession with profit and satisfying Wall Street expectations in a new book by former 'Wall Street Journal' reporter Thomas O'Boyle. O'Boyle also criticized business magazines for treating Welch as an American business icon, pointing out that Welch had wantonly laid off thousands of GE workers since he assumed the top post in 1981. O'Boyle likewise bemoaned GE's transformation from an innovative company to a soulless financial conglomerate under Welch.
