Compliance to owner's manual warnings: influence of familiarity and the placement of a supplemental directive

Article Abstract:

The placement of supplemental warnings about the instillation of computer equipment along with the experience-level of the installer are the main factors determining compliance with manufacturers' instructions. first-time installers are more likely to follow directions than those with installation experience. The best way to increase compliance appears to be the use of a sticker in a conspicuous place other than the manual, such as the part itself, that refers the installer to the directions.

Warning signal words: connoted strength and understandability by children, elders, and non-native English speakers

Article Abstract:

The terms 'DANGER,' 'WARNING' and 'CAUTION' are often used as product labels to warn users of potential hazards. Early research has focused on the consistency of people's perception of hazards with the levels recommended by design standards. The objective of the present study is to find out if the perception of young children, old people and non-native English speakers on connoted hazard levels are similar to the terms as college students and published guidelines.
