Continental Europe: a mixed bag

Article Abstract:

Share prices in Germany have been affected by the high value of the German mark, which has affected companies that export. This has led to a drop in share prices from Sep 1995, though a gain of 5% since Jan 1995 benefits UK investors with a 15% rise due to the strength of the mark. French shares have risen little, but again UK investors benefit from the strength of the French franc in relation to pound sterling. Switzerland has seen both a strong rise in share prices and foreign investors benefit from the strength of the Swiss franc.

Down to earth

Article Abstract:

Malaysian stock prices have dropped since feb 1997 and this has been exacerbated for foreign investors by a drop in value for the Malaysian currency. High debt levels mean that the financial system is vulnerable if economic growth slows. The government has set up the National Economic Action Council to tackle the problem. The aims to to improve the balance of trade through local sourcing and controls on imports. Investors are not persuaded that they should return, although Malaysian stocks could appear cheap.
