Dependency in manufacturer-retailer relationships: the potential implications of retail internationalisation for indigenous food manufacturers

Article Abstract:

Research into the existing trading relationships, dependencies and interdependencies among Irish food manufacturers and their retail customers in Ireland and the UK before Tesco Stores purchased Power Supermarkets in Mar 1997 reveals that the Irish and UK grocery retailing markets were clearly segregated. It is suggested that there are clear differentials in terms of the role retailers play in the emergence and growth of manufacturing companies. It was also possible to identify some of the most important ways in which the retail internationalization process will probably influence indigenous food manufacturers.
