Diversification helps NWF get over BSE
Article Abstract:
NWF reported a drop in pre-tax profit of 26% for 1996 to 1997 due to a drop in animal feed sales at a time of concern about mad cow disease. The company was a farmers' cooperative until 1988, and has diversifed into fuel and retail, away from animal feed. The retail side performed well in 1997, and the company has remained profitable despite depressed conditions in United Kingdom farming. Fuel, distribution and retail have good prospects which should help offset problems in the farming side.

NWF: fruits of a drought
Article Abstract:
NWF was set up as a farmers' co-operative, and should benefit from strong demand for animal feed in 1995 due to a drought. Feed production accounts for four fifths of the company's agricultural activities and 40% of the sales of the group. The group is also involved in the distribution of groceries and fuel, the latter accounting for a fifth of the group's operating profit. NWF distributes groceries to supermarkets with goods from different suppliers in one load.

Happy pigs
Article Abstract:
Cranswick is a UK meat processor and pig producer which aims to expand its pet products and bird feed activities. The company holds a stake of over 10% in the UK market for pigs reared outdoors. The pigs are raised in good conditions though these are not classified as organic. Diversification away from pigs helps offset the volatility in the pig market. This still brings some vulnerability, and the company is also dependent on sales to large supermarkets.
