Article Abstract:

Ladbroke may have to sell Coral Racing if the acquisition is not approved by the United Kingdom Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC). The MMC has spent four months investigating the acquisition which took place in Dec 1997. A report is due on Jul 31 1998, and the Deprtment of Trade and Industry should issue a ruling within 20 working days. Ladbroke could sell Coral for more than 400 million pounds sterling, more than the 375.5 million pounds paid, due to improvements made.

Gus Carter: lottery casualty

Article Abstract:

Gus Carter has seen trading affected by the UK National Lottery. The company was floated in 1995, and has been affected by competition from scratch cards. The company saw a drop in profit to 377,000 pounds sterling for 1st half 1995 compared with 589,000 for the previous period. Most of the company's 71 outlets make a profit but Gus Carter may carry out rationalization. Shops are to be modernised, and the company is studying a computer system which could reduce costs.

The luck of the draw

Article Abstract:

Gambling is not usually a prudent way to invest. The UK National Lottery offers poor odds for investors, and a loss of 80% of funds staked is normal over a year. UK Football pools offer better odds but these are still low. UK premium bonds, offered by National Savings, are a better option for investors seeking to gamble. They involve a minimum stake of 100 pounds sterling and aim to return some 5.6% of funds invested. The stake is not lost and is used each month.
