Small-scale, intensive cultivation methods: the effects of deep hand tillage on the productivity of bush beans and red beets

Article Abstract:

The effects of hand tillage, or the loosening of the planting bed to about 50 cm deep, on the yield and nutrient uptake of bush beans and red beets in a sandy loam soil were evaluated. Based on anecdotal evidence, this intensive cultivation is recommended to small farms or to landholders producing for their own use because it purportedly increases crop productivity at minimal use of resources. A comparison between intensive method and mechanical subsoiling on crop productivity is discussed.

Taking a pragmatic behavioral approach to alternative agriculture research

Article Abstract:

Agricultural researchers should adopt a pragmatic behavioral approach to research to address environmental and social perspectives that affect human behavior. The four main goals of pragmatic research are the acceptance of chaos in the relationship between humans and the environment, understanding based on human experience, perception of problems as problematic situations and promotion of activism and policy formulation.
