Empty bowl today, duck soup tomorrow

Article Abstract:

UK power plant construction companies are among those investing in China. Demand is mainly for hydro-electric turbines and nuclear, since fuel for plants fired by hydrocarbons is scarce in China. Competition is fierce and prices are low, with an obligation to guarantee completion dates and use parts from Chinese state owned factories. UK companies in China include United Biscuits with a plant in Canton, and Pilkington, which plans a new plant in Shanghai, in addition to its existing Chinese production facilities.

Companies adapt to tax on holes

Article Abstract:

The UK government has implemented a landfill tax from Oct 1 1996. The government aims to encourage recycling by making it more expensive to dump waste. The percentage of waste sent to landfill sites is to be cut to 60% from 70% if the government achieves its objective. Landfill operators pay the tax, but they are likely to raise charges for waste producers. Companies such as Biffa and Waste management which have invested in recycling should benefit from this move.
