Ergonomic workplace assessment in a health care context
Article Abstract:
Healthcare professions have exhibited a high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries because of equipment and patient handling. Thus, international studies have focused on injuries related to work. To prevent their occurrence, the UK Health and Safety Executive and the European Community Directives have required workplace evaluation for occupational health and safety. Ergonomics lays the foundation upon which such job site assessments are made.

Background to sitting at work: Research-based requirements for the design of work seats
Article Abstract:
The human body's responses to sitting are complex, involving the anatomy and physiology of the sitter as well as the structure of the seat, the desk and the environment. A discussion on the major reactions of the spine, the muscles and the spinal discs is presented together with a description of their interactions when adopting sitting postures and reasons why certain postures are to be preferred.
