Facts with fax
Article Abstract:
It is now possible for facsimile (fax) machines to provide uninterrupted and unattended information service by combining high-power PCs, fax boards and voice boards. Fax information systems are often used as tools for the speedy dissemination of information within an extensive organization, to create an additional fast supply facitlity to businesses, and even to establish new operations. This communication technology is easy to operate. People in search of information only need to call information providers through a telephone or a fax machine with multifrequency tones. In some fax machines it is the caller who has to pay for the relay of the information, while in others it is the information provider who is billed for the call. How soon the information is relayed determines who pays for the transaction.

Document image processing: who needs it?
Article Abstract:
Document image processing (DIP) is a technology that provides an alternative to paper-based information. It essentially involves the scanning of documents for storage in digitized form, usually on an optical disk. The digitized information can then be retrieved later and viewed repeatedly by any number of users at the same time. The document scanned could be a book page, a drawing, computer generated text and graphics, or even a fax. A DIP system can be a stand-alone unit or computer network-connected. Ready-to-use systems can cost from under 10,000 pounds to over a million pounds sterling. DIP's ability to store and retrieve paper-based information is expected to make it an essential part of tomorrow's business office.
