Furniture

Article Abstract:

Commercial interior designers have done very little in raising the standards of industrial design efficiency. The growing number of their dissatisfied clients attests to the futile attempts of such firms to resort to impractical but very expensive furniture designs which hamper, rather than enhance, worker productivity. Since then, the demand for simpler, cheaper, but more practical furniture designs has brought about drastic changes among commercial design firms. The demise and reorganization of several firms attests to the low demand for their services. These firms can only redeem themselves once they turn out more functional designs.

Furniture manufacturers awaken to find the ADA

Article Abstract:

Despite the two-year wait before the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was implemented, office furniture manufacturers have just begun to realize the need to create products for workers with disabilities. Herman Miller, Knoll, Rhamdec and Steelcase have created furniture for workers with disabilities. Herman Miller's and Knoll's height-adjustable desks are well-known and Rhamdec has created MYDESC, which is extremely flexible. Knoll has also created an overhead storage unit, the Reuter Overhead. Steelcase has created a division, Casecraft, that specializes in customizing furniture for the handicapped.

Furniture

Article Abstract:

The increasing demand for knowledge workers has significance for office furniture designers, because businesses will require such workers to produce in any location for maximum output. However, there is a lack of such products for the virtual workplace, as shown by the 1992 NeoCon convention in Chicago. Thus, the right direction for the future is exemplified by Steelcase Inc.'s Commons and Personal Harbor workplace design, which is described. This optimal product is encouraged for the rest of the industry.
