Greenalls
Article Abstract:
Greenalls acquired the Boddington pub estate for 666 million pounds sterling and the acquisition has contributed 47 million pounds to Greenalls' operating profit. Nearly 500 jobs have been shed. Greenalls has also invested 179 million pounds sterling on modernising pubs, restaurants and hotels. The company is retaining luxury hotels but selling three-star establishments and hotels in the US. The company may be hit by a rise in beer prices which could result from the acquisition of Carlsberg-Tetley by Bass, but Greenalls has supply contracts lasting until Sep 1998 minimum. Grrenalls' profit is forecast at 164 million pounds sterling for 1996 to 1997 by NatWest.

Old English Pub Co
Article Abstract:
Old English Pub Co. is forecast to increase its profit by over 100% in 1998, but the sector as a whole has been affected by Regent Inns' profit warning, so the stock price of Old English does not reflect its performance. The company has 172 outlets geared to older, affluent customers in the traditional unbranded inns market. The company's niche position is a key strength and it is focusing on accommodation and food, so it may remove the word 'pub' from its name.
