Inflated opinions
Article Abstract:
The internet is seen as helping to keep down prices, but the link between the internet and economic activity is imperfectly understood. Growth rates and profit for technology and internet companies may not be as high as forecast. Investors who do not see high profit growth as achievable by technology companies may favor sunset companies, which may enjoy rallies after moves downwards. Central banks face a difficult task, and the US Federal Reserve will not wish to trigger a stock price fall so sharp that interest rates then have to be raised.

Longer odds than you think
Article Abstract:

High-tech stocks reap net gains from index
Article Abstract:
Technology stocks have performed well in 4th qtr 1999, and their performance has been boosted by the launch of the techMARK index by the London Stock Exchange on Nov 4 1999. This attracted stocks to London that might otherwise have gone elsewhere. Technology stocks still account for a smaller proportion of the market in Britain than the US, where they account for around 25% of domestic stock market capitalization compared with 5% for Britain. New issues in 2000 are likely to mop up demand and make the market less frothy.
