Article Abstract:

New environmental regulations covering the disposal of electronic waste are spurring companies to reuse or sell personal computers instead of simply discarding them. Marks and Spencer (M&S), for example, has completed a reuse project involving 4,000 obsolete computers that were returned to ICL. As a result, 75% of these computers were reused by M&S after being refurbished, 15% sold to charity, 5% resold to employees and the remaining 5% stripped down according to environmental regulations. The remarketing specialist Technical Assistance Management (TAM) offers a similar service, buying old equipment from large corporations, before refurbishing these computers for resale to students, small businesses, and educational and health care organizations. TAM, the UK's biggest computer reuse company, cleans data and checks for 2000 compliance before selling second-hand machines.

Article Abstract:

The tendency of British businesses to pay late is compelling many organizations to install information technology (IT) systems to improve the efficiency of their credit management process. Late payment creates serious cash flow difficulties that could eventually result in the collapse of a business. The Society of Practitioners of Insolvency's recent survey of business failures reveals that bad debt (11%) and finance problems (22%) have become major causes of insolvency. To minimize these problems, a growing number of companies are turning to a wide array of IT products such as credit scoring systems, debt collection software and specialist packages. Some companies are even going so far as to outsource their entire credit management operation to improve its efficiency.
