IBM's purchase of Lotus Development Corp. has raised some questions regarding the marketing strategy for Lotus software. The major question is how to position Notes and other Lotus software which compete against some of IBM's software. Other concerns were raised about the potential negative impact of IBM's huge but slow-moving marketing machinery on Lotus's lean and agile marketing operations, and the merger's potential effect of pushing rival software companies into the Microsoft camp.

Quarterdeck launches new magazine

Quarterdeck Office Systems, a Santa Monica, CA-based firms that sells enhancements to Microsoft's operating system, will launch a new magazine tentatively called Quarter Magazine. The 50,000-circulation magazine will initially be distributed to large client companies that have bought licensing agreements from Quarterdeck. The magazine is intended to be both an independent profit center and a marketing support program for the company.

Overseas subsidiaries of IBM Corp have acquired more manufacturing and marketing autonomy to pursue new business opportunities.
