Ibstock: another brick in the wall

Article Abstract:

Ibstock is acquiring a brick business from Redland and is using a rights issue two thirds of the investment needed. Ibstock will become the biggest UK brick producer after this acquisition, with some 33% of the market compared to 11% in 1995. The UK market has an annual demand of some 3 billion bricks compared with capacity for 3.8 billion. Ibstock will be able to reduce fixed costs and concentrated production in big plants, which will help boost the company's margins.

Brick makers discover their feet of clay

Article Abstract:

Blockleys is a UK brick maker which produces high-quality products but faces a crisis in the housebuilding industry. The company holds a 2% stake in the UK market for bricks and is a major supplier of paving bricks. The company continued production in the early 1990s recession and has a large amount in stocks. Blockleys reopened its Heritage plant in Jan 1995, and units costs are lower at this plant. The startegy has been affected by the crisis among UK housebuilders.

Titon: safe hands

Article Abstract:

Titon is a UK company producing ventilators for windows and fittings for doors, The company is benefiting from new building regulations on ventilation and Titon holds a stake of more than 50% in the UK market. Titon also has an operation in the US which is not large but which brings in a profit. The company should see a rise in profit of a minimum of 20% in 1996. Titon is switching from the unlisted securities market in Jan 1996 to a full listing.
