Licence to kill: the nightclub business
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government may allow pubs to open longer hours in wales and England, which could affect nighclubs. The number of traditional discos is dropping, and there could be consolidation in the industry. There is already speculation of a merger between Luminar and First Leisure. Clubs may need to cut prices and reduce admission fees to attract customers. Pubs will face extra costs if they stay open, and this will be especially true if the government brings in capacity restrictions for pubs which already apply to nightclubs.

The company has invested 2.6 million pounds sterling in the refurbishment of tenanted pubs, and has improved average gross profits and turnover per pub.

It's superpub
Article Abstract:
Surrey Free Inns specialises in large pubs to increase volume sales. Five of these pubs have sales in excess of 1 million pounds sterling annually. The company is studying sites for other large pubs and aims to use cash flow for growth, after a crisis due to over-expansion during the early 1990s. The company has 25 pubs, 10 of which may be sold since they cannot be used for the large pub formula. The company reported a rise in pre-tax profit for the 44 weeks to April 1995.
