A period of economic growth can encourage excess, particularly when growth declines and excess in turn brings failure and when that happens reforms are made to professional standards and also to practical corporate governance, yet corporate failures recur as the fundamental judgments are mistaken. Independence of thought and the ability to challenge assumptions in a constructive spirit are also needed in addition to procedures.
