Local hero: Orange County became a derivatives embarassment four years ago, but Treasurer John Moorlach is remaking the county's financial image - and taking on Wall Street

Article Abstract:

Orange County Treasurer John Moorlach became a local hero of sorts due to his skillful handling of the county's finance, which rescued the county from its bad investments in derivatives in 1994, wherein it lost almost $1.6 bil. But Moorlach's hero status is attributed more to his courage in going after the investment bankers which encouraged then county treasurer Robert Citron to accumulate an investment portfolio based on derivatives. This has resulted in the county's $420 mil settlement with investment banker Merrill Lynch as well as the $117.5 mil settlement from Morgan Stanley and Nomura Securities.

Reinsurers retain a captive audience

Article Abstract:

Corporate insurance captives are spurring the new products development activities in reinsurers. Some of the more innovative products from reinsurers to address the financial management needs of captive companies include reinsurance pools, which allow companies to limit their exposure by contributing to a larger body of claims. Reinsurance pools help smooth out variability in annual losses of captive companies, which is traded for a predictable assessment of costs.
