Macfarlane (Clansman) produces packaging and closures for whiskey bottles and includes Daniel Montgomery which accounted for some 33% of operating profit in 1995. A reduction in stocks by Montgomery's customers has affected sales for 1st half 1996. ACW has also been affected by lost sales due to price competition among detergent retailers. The group is undertaking heavy capital expenditure but still benefits from strong finances. The company is well-managed but is affected by problems in the markets it operates in.

Britton: attractive package

Article Abstract:

Britton is a producer of plastic packaging and cartons which includes UPC, a US carton producer. UPC has increased its market share by setting up close links with clients, and capacity has been increased with a new plant in Mitchell, South Dakota. The company is thus able to grow organically as well as through acquisitions. Britton has also improved the operating efficiency of its plastics division in the UK, and has reduced wastage. The company's profit is forecast at 26 million pounds sterling for 1997.
