Malaysia: hubris?
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian economy is causing concern among some foreign investors who argue that target growth rates are too ambitious and that the country is taking on a screwdriver assembly role. Continued growth will need more than cheap labor. There is also concern over political corruption. The Kuala Lumpur stock exchange has performed well despite these concerns but its growth does not reflect the rapid growth of gross domestic product. Stockbrokers are divided in their asessments with BZW among those expressing caution on Malaysia.

Malaysia: vote happy
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian economy has been growing by more than 8% for 8 years, but there is concern over inflation. Actual inflation is likely to be above official figures, and interest rate rises are likely. Malaysia also suffers from a deterioration in its current account and the Malaysian currency has been weak, which also means that there is pressure to raise interest rates. Rates are likely to be raised after the 1995 election, and this could have an impact on the stock market.

Malaysia: heightened risk
Article Abstract:
There are a number of factors that could affect share prices in Malaysia, according to Crosby. These include the balance of payments and inflation, and the likelihood that higher inflation levels could lead to tight monetary policy. Prices and margins may be affected by the impact of high levels of investment on supply. Profits could be affected by wage rises. It is unclear when the impact of these factors will be noted on the Malaysian stock market.
