Navy shipbuilding plans would require $15 billion-$18 billion: Report

Article Abstract:

Navy shipbuilding plans to create a fleet of 260 to 325 ships and submarines by 2035 would require $15 billion to $18.3 billion annually, which is more than the $8.721 billion proposed for shipbuilding and conversion in the fiscal year ending 30 September 2006. The fiscal 2006 Navy budget plan will be funding for only four ships and in later years it will be funding for seven to twelve ships and submarines a year.

Navy favors extra DD(X), not old DDG

Article Abstract:

The Navy prefers to satisfy the lack of funds for destroyer construction in the fiscal year 2006 by funding for extra next generation DD(X) destroyer rather than budgeting for one more old-style DDG-51 Class destroyer. Ship-construction industry leader has warned, reports the author, of a major crisis for two leading defense contractors and their suppliers due to the total lack of funds.

Senators challenge Navy strategy for shipbuilding

Article Abstract:

Senators have expressed their concern over the funding strategy adopted by the United States Navy for the construction of warships. The Senators also indicated that the irregular and insufficient Navy shipbuilding programs adversely affected the defense industrial base that produces warships.
