Negotiating the paths of war

Article Abstract:

Whirlwind Wheelchair Inc. founder Ralf Hotchkiss has pioneered the design and production of lightweight, low-cost wheelchairs for the Third World. Working from his classroom/studio at San Francisco State University, his latest project is designing wheelchairs for the disabled in the aftermath of war in Afghanistan. Many people there are victims of land mines and bombings, and live in isolated rural locations where transportation is difficult. The proposed solution for Afghanistan is a wheelchair featuring an adjustable-width seat, extended front wheels to prevent tipping and thick back wheels to avoid sinking in sand or dirt.

The process of how Moen Inc.'s successful revolution showerhead was conceived and then designed is described. The research started in 1995 after which a team of designers and engineers worked on the product with the goal to design a showerhead with multiple functions to meet multiple needs.
