'Netwarriors' fight way to top in corporate PR

Article Abstract:

The Council for Biotechnology Information has launched an advertising campaign designed to convince US consumers of the safety of biotechnology food. The strategy, however, is an age-old method which was effective in the 1980s. With the advent of the Internet, the strategy is ineffective in a fast-paced communications arena. The organization's public relations people should realize that advertising, toll-free phone lines and brochures are out-of-date in cyberspace. They could learn from the tactics employed by anti-biotech activists which have resorted to the power of the Internet to make their argument without the use of paid advertising.
