New sources of pancreatic beta-cells

Article Abstract:

Two major initiatives are under way to correct the beta-cell deficit of diabetes, of which one would generate beta-cells ex vivo that are suitable for transplantation and the second would stimulate regeneration of beta-cells in the pancreas. Studies show that while beta-cells have a potential for dedifferentiation, expansion, and redifferentiation, the search of new sources of beta-cells has opened new opportunities and spawned clinical trials.

Production of recombinant protein therapeutics in cultivated mammalian cells

Cultivated mammalian cells are used for the production of recombinant proteins for clinical applications because of their capacity for proper protein folding, assembly and post-translational modification. The advancements in production systems as well as through vector and host cell engineering for improving mammalian cell systems are described.
