Annual season for sharing raises funds for needy

Community newspaper The Arizona Republic has an annual holiday campaign called 'Season for Sharing,' whose main objective is to raise funds for non-profit agencies that serve children, the hungry, homeless and elderly in the state. The campaign sends 100,000 direct-mail pieces to the newspaper's readers that is accompanied by an eight-week news campaign. More than 19,500 readers donated $1.85 million from mid-Nov 1999 through mid-Jan 2000.

Breast cancer awareness page sells easily in October

Community newspaper The Times of Munster, AL, started running a 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month' page, which included recommendations for good breast health, information about breast cancer and carried a variety of sponsors. The Times used the color pink throughout the page to emphasize the theme. The page resulted in $4,000 of advertising revenues for the newspaper since it was well received by readers and advertisers.
