Organic trend set to trigger layout rethink
Article Abstract:
According to consultant RTS Associates European consumers are tending towards organic and natural foods whilst rejecting functional, light and health foods. The trend is evident in the milk sector where consumers are buying skimmed and semi-skimmed milk alongside full butterfat ice-cream. The same is true in many food categories as consumers buy health options such as fruit, alongside more gateaux and other desserts. The majority of European consumers are taking on diets which include chicken, pasta, potatoes, fish, rice ad salad leaves and then supplementing these foods with snacks and other indulgences. As a result of this change in direction retailers are having to change the way they organise their in-store merchandise. It could also affect which producers retailers use. Attitudes are also being affected by the recent spate of food scares including BSE.

UK: DEMAND FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
Article Abstract:
The annual Market Review from the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Information Bureau is said to indicate a growth in demand for exotic and premium priced items. Although sales of fruit and vegetables by volume fell by 4% during the year, they rose by over 11% in spending terms. This increase is said to be due to the rise in demand for speciality and pre-packed vegetables that are sold at a higher price. The heightened demand for these products is said to be related to consumers becoming more adventurous, supermarkets allocating more space to these fixtures and the popularity of celebrity chef programmes on the television.
