Proactive corporate environmental strategy and the development of competitively valuable organizational capabilities

Article Abstract:

A two-phase study was conducted to investigate the relationship between environmental responsiveness strategies and the development of competitively important organizational capabilities. In the first phase, comparative case studies were performed via interviews in seven Canadian oil and gas firms to explore the resource-based view of the firm in terms of corporate environmental responsiveness. In the second phase, a mail survey of the industry was performed to test the connections discovered in the first phase. Findings revealed that strategies of proactive responsiveness to the uncertainties common in business and ecological issues influence the generation of specific organizational capabilities. These capabilities were in turn found to affect competitiveness.
