Rethinking agricultural education

Article Abstract:

The curriculum of public agricultural colleges should be changed to promote sustainable agriculture. A curriculum promoting sustainable agriculture should consist of courses on agricultural history, agricultural ecology and conservation. Other topics that should be addressed include the balance between agricultural self-reliance and trade, the role of the human element in agriculture, and long-term agricultural problems and issues. Agricultural education also should include farm apprenticeships and have actual farmers in residence at the college.

Can agricultural colleges meet the needs of sustainable agriculture?

Article Abstract:

Amid growing concern about conventional agricultural methods, colleges face many constraints to meeting the needs of sustainable agriculture. These constraints include assumptions and biases, the backgrounds of research scientists, underemphasis on ecosystem-level biology, and a focus on the economics of farming at the expense of its environmental and sociological aspects. New programs are grappling with these problems, but must include all interested parties.
