Biochemist Robert Tjian built a mega-biotech conglomerate Turalik in January 1992, which wanted to discover drugs based on understanding of how genes are controlled inside the cell through transcription factors and to make drugs in the form of pills. Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgen acquired Turalik in March 2003 as it had the right scientists, an attribute that can take a company much further than the right science.

Tracking down tissues

Article Abstract:

The inspection of several tissue banks and procurement facilities by the Human Tissue Task Force (HTTF), an internal U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) body, has revealed that the tracking systems and regular audits should be improved. The companies are trying to find their own ways of collecting materials and determining its quality as the demand for human tissues for drug research and development is growing.

Cellulosic ethanol booms despite unproven business models

A new trend of using lignocellulosic feedstocks such as corn stover, grasses and wood chips as alternative biofuels is gaining significance. The use of lignocellulosic ethanol is increasing commercially as many biochemical industries are building production facilities and setting up plants.
