SAVE - or scupper?
Article Abstract:
A number of heads of UK independent retail chains maintain that the Sainsbury's Assisting Village Enterprises project (SAVE) is purely a political move to counter any allegations that the UK supermarket is killing off village stores, and urge independent retailers not to support the scheme. According to Trevor Dixon, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, the scheme which allows village stores to stock Sainsbury's own label ambient goods at supermarket prices, will weaken the all important link between village stores and the wholesale market. In addition, independent retailers are not taking the scheme seriously as it does nit include fresh and chilled products. The scheme is viewed as detrimental to independent retailers' customer base, whilst notching up own label product sales for Sainsbury's.

UK: DTI REPORT SHOULD DISPROVE RIP-OFF CLAIMS
Article Abstract:
A report by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is expected to disprove claims that British supermarkets overcharge customers for food in comparison with those in the USA, Germany and France. Although the DTI has not yet announced a date for publication of the findings, industry insiders believe that the results will be published on 2 February 2000 and it is expected that any large discrepancies will be found amongst the non-food sectors such as clothing and electrical goods.
