Satellites per ardura, ad astra?
Article Abstract:
Non-military uses for artificial satellites are discussed in the areas of telecommunications, remote sensing and meteorology. In 1985, 147 artificial satellites were launched (113 were Russian, 20 were from the U.S. and the remaining 14 were launched by the rest of the world). The first telecommunications satellite, Intelsat 1 (a.k.a., Early Bird), was launched in 1965. Since that time the U.S. has spent $1,634 million on satellites with commercial applications. The economics of the industry are examined, and statistical data are provided; for example, Western European revenues from satellite services are estimated to be $120 million by 1988, and insurance providers have paid out a total $600 million in claims for failed commercial satellites.
