The federal deposit insurance fund that didn't put a bite on U.S. taxpayers
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on how differences in incentive structure limit the attractiveness of interest-rate speculation and other risk-taking opportunities to managers and regulators of credit unions. The results suggest that expanded use of coinsurance and private monitoring could lessen taxpayer loss exposure in government deposit insurance system. A partnership between private sureties and federal deposit insurers patterned after private bonding arrangements in the credit-union sector provides a way to reduce the frequency and severity of future taxpayer bailouts.
