The value chain of a newspaper

Article Abstract:

Newspaper publishers should examine all links in the newspaper value chain to break out from age-old traditional thinking. While emphasis on the revenue-generating departments of advertising and circulation is not really misplaced, a review of the traditional newspaper model could give the publisher valuable insights. One way to get a refreshing look is to look at other industries and their best practices in such areas as recruitment and management of work force. The newspaper industry also seems to lag behind other service industries in delivering service even on weekends.

Newspaper humming right along

Article Abstract:

The San Antonio Express-News responds to competing media with its latest marketing weapon, the Humflinger, appearing at community festivities, promotional events and in advertising campaigns for the paper. The rolling billboard maximizes the paper's presence in the community and adds location remotes that feature free goodies and customer service presence. The Humflinger is touted to bring a tangible extension of the brand through consistent on-site product awareness and customer service.
