True cost

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by the consulting firm Organization and Technology (OTR) found that costs related to client/server computing has been magnified by past studies. Based on the response of 2,300 European users, the report revealed that client/server architectures are actually less costly than conventional systems, which contradicts the findings of all studies published in 1994. OTR discovered that there is no truth to the reports that individuals using client/server systems are time-inefficient and need significant amounts of support. The consultancy also established that supporting a network PC requires only 15 minutes per day. Maintenance and training are less expensive when client/server architectures are used. OTR recommends removal of disks from desktop PCs, restriction of end-user interface functions and an increase in training on application packages to boost savings.
