Trust in the hands of the Lord

Article Abstract:

The UK's National Trust recently celebrated its centennial amidst much controversy. One hundred years after its founding in 1895, the institution has grown into a massive organization with more than two million members and which manages 26 nature reserves, 466 special sites of scientific interest, 207 historic houses, 162 gardens, 25 industrial monuments and 51 religious buildings. However, despite its success, the National Trust has not been without its share of problems and embarrassments. Recently it was thrashed in the book 'Gilding the Acorn: Behind the Facade of the National Trust,' was humiliated by a play it commissioned that exposed the scandals surrounding its three founders, and was sharply criticized for its decision to lay off elderly staff while increasing the chairman's honorarium sixfold. Chmn. Lord Chorley dismisses the criticisms leveled against the National Trust and insists that the organization is an 'extraordinary success story.'
