UK: ITC RULING ON SAFEWAY GRAPE ADVERT

Article Abstract:

The Indepedendent Television Commission (ITC) has ruled that Safeway must not show one of its 'Freddie' adverts, featuring a toddler eating grapes with his head tipped back, before 9pm. The move follows complaints from 11 viewers, including a doctor and two nurses, who said that any children imitating Freddie's behaviour ran the risk of choking to death. According to the ITC, the advert was not unsuitable for viewing, but transmission could not be justified while impressionable children might be watching. A Safeway spokeswoman, expressing the family retailer's horror at the complaints, confirmed that it would comply with the request.
