UK: TAKE-HOME DRINKS MARKET DOING WELL

Article Abstract:

Most sectors in the take-home drinks trade are growing strongly, as they continue to benefit from strong promotional activity. Off-trade drink sales have grown by 9% in the year to 17 October, according to Taylor Nelson Sofres Liquorpanel. The warm autumnal weather helped to sustain strong sales of lager and cider. Standard lager continues as the star performer, with sales up 38% overall. Canned ales have risen by 10% and premium bottled ales by 15%; light wine sales are up by 11% overall, though red wine (up 17%) has done better than white (up 4%). As to spirits, TV advertising for premium packaged lines such as Barcardi Breezer, Metz, V2 and Rigo is paying off, and the category is growing by 84% a year.

..and steps up ready-to-heat

Article Abstract:

Following the successful launch of its in-store Curry Bar, CRS, the has started to trial ready-to-heat Chinese dishes at its stores in Pyle, Glamorgan, and Goole in Lincolnshire for a 10 week period, and may also trial Thai green curries in a number of stores within six to nine months. The Curry Bar concept generated sales of between GB 1,000 and GB 2,000 during the trial period over Christmas 1997 and early 1998, which were unaffected by the reduction in space allocated to cooked meats and cheeses. CRS has introduced smaller sized bars in its smaller outlets, which it claims may damage Asda's share of the take-home meal sector.
