'Vote for us - we don't know what we're doing.'(UK economic policy and problems in managing the economy)
Article Abstract:
Economic policy may be able to create an environment to foster economic growth but cannot of itself help boost economic growth, many economists argue. Some economists argue that even stability is difficult to achieve through economic policy since there is a time lag before policies take effect. Accurate forecasts are difficult to achieve and this can lead to policy mistakes. The government can still undertake measures such as welfare reforms and improvements to training which can help boost economic growth.

Bank paves way for new base rate cut
Article Abstract:
UK interest rates could be reduced by some 0.25% in Mar 1996, leaving base rates at 6%. The inflation report from the Bank of England, issued in Feb 1996, foresaw inflation as likely to be below the mid-range for the government's target. Retail sales dropped in Jan 1996, as did retail price inflation. UK share prices may not rise as a result of a rate cut, since events in the US appear to have more impact on UK shares than do UK interest rates.

Interest rates: price rises prompt hike
Article Abstract:
UK interest rates have been raised by 0.25% to 6% due to concern that underlying inflation could rise further. UK gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.8% in 3rd qtr 1996, above the long term rate, and UK house prices are rising rapidly. The move appears to have reassured financial markets. UK rates may not have to rise again prior to an election, due to this pre-emptive move, and the rise is too small to push up mortgage rates.
