Watch out for the bargain basement Peps
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom personal equity plans could be abolished in favor of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) which are scheduled to be introduced in 1999. Investors in Peps should beware of high charges which can offset Peps' tax benefits. Charges are being reduced by a number of Pep managers and financial advisers may offer rebates. There are discount brokers in the UK who can offer significant rebates to all clients. Discount brokers are suitable for investors who know which Pep they need, while other investors should use advisers.

SORP makes the picture clearer
Article Abstract:
The UK Association of Investment Trust Companies (AITC) has issued a Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) for financial reporting by trusts. The aim is to standardize the presentation of information to allow investors to make comparisons more easily. SORP was issued in Dec 1995 and tackles expenses such as finance costs, investment valuation, warrants, hedging and foreign exchange transactions. Investment trusts are gradually presenting information in a more standardized way and this is likely to improve.
