We're not making candy bars

Article Abstract:

Norwegian editors and publishers in summer 2000 have extensively discussed the future of newspapers and how much longer they will be around. One successful publisher in Norway said that newspapers would survive when editors and marketing people fully understand the difference in making a newspaper and manufacturing a candy bar. He noted that candy bar makers have to make a product that will satisfy all people. Making a newspaper, on the other hand, means getting involved with people, developing closer ties to readers and buyers and inviting readers and advertisers to contribute their input.

Lessons from Norway

Article Abstract:

Norwegian newspapers are being transformed from really being a newspaper to a wrapping of advertisements. This trend is due to the fact that newspapers are no longer concerned about branding while readers do not fully value a serious, independent newspaper. Other factors driving the trend are the emergence of free newspapers, local radio and other means of communication which are getting more attention. To counter the trend, newspapers, therefore, should be more in touch with readers and stick to their core busiiness.
