Undecided students: how one college developed a collaborative approach to help students choose majors and careers
Article Abstract:
The University of Wisconsin in La Crosse, WI, has developed a new career center which is a collaboration between the faculty and the career services staff. This development is the result of students' complaints regarding the inefficiency of the Counseling and Testing Center and Career Services Office due to the reluctance of faculty to usurp the role of career services staff, and vice versa. Thus, the Academic Discovery Lab was created to advise students on career choices. The success of the new career center was evident in the large number of students who used the services of the lab.

Engineering better graduates
Article Abstract:
Oregon State University (OSU) and three major companies formed the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP), which has effectively combined both business and education. The students are selected on a competitive basis and undergo two six-month internships. They present their papers at an Engineering seminar, and are assessed strictly twice during their training program. The success of MECOP is attributed to its difficult syllabus, evaluation process, and offer of practical experience.
