Characterization and modeling of cis-trans photoisomerization of a trifluoromethoxy-substituted metacrylate copolymer monolayer at a fluid interface
Article Abstract:
A model is derived to analyze the cis-trans photoisomerization of a photochromic trifluoromethyl-substituted metacrylate copolymer monolayer. It is shown that the model accurately predicts the characteristics of the components of the cis and trans transformation processes. Among these are that the minimum area demand per repeating unit of the trans conformation is less than that of the cis conformer. Good agreement was also obtained between model and experimental results.

Low-temperature optical and resonance Raman spectra of a carotenoid cation radical in photosystem II
Article Abstract:
The illumination of manganese-depleted Synechocystis PCC 6803 photosystem (PS) II core complexes at 77 K results to a reversible photooxidation of a carotenoid to form a carotenoid cation radical. The resonance Raman spectra of the carotenoid cation radical in a protein has been obtained for the first time. One of the reaction center-bound beta-carotenes in PS II is also shown to be involved in the secondary cytochrome b559/chlorophyll pathway.

Semiconductor photocatalysis: photodegradation and trans-cis photoisomerization of carotenoids
Article Abstract:
The irradiation of mixtures of carotenoids and semiconductor CdS or ZnO particles showed that canthaxanthin and beta carotene can undergo charge transfers on CdS and ZnO particle surfaces. The charge transfer leads to the photodegradation of beta carotene on ZnO and CdS and of canthaxanthin on ZnO only. CdS also catalyzes geometrical photoisomerization of all-trans-canthaxanthin and beta carotene, forming mainly 9-cis and 13-cis isomers.
