Correlation of free radical yields with strand break yields produced in plasmid DNA by the direct effect of ionizing radiation
Article Abstract:
The correlation of free radical formation (fr) with a single strand break (ssb) and double strand break (dsb) formation in DNA exposed to the direct effects of ionizing radiation is determined. It is concluded from the results that a significant fraction of strand breaks are derived from precursors other than trapped DNA radicals, for which various mechanisms are considered to explain this disparity, including one that entails two one-electron oxidations of a single deoxyribose carbon.

Observation of individual microtubule motor steps in living cells with endocytosed quantum dots
Article Abstract:
The observation of individual steps taken by motor proteins in living cells by following movements of endocytic vesicles that contain quantum dots (QD) with a fast camera are reported. The ability of the QD assay to probe the operation of motor proteins at the molecular level in living cells under physiological conditions is demonstrated.
