Electron injection into the surfaces states of ZrO(sub 2) nanoparticles from photoexcited quinizarin and its derivatives: effect of surface modification
Article Abstract:
The effect of surface modification on interfacial electron transfer (IET) dynamics into the surface states of ZrO(sub2) nanoparticles sensitized by quinizarin (Qz) and its derivatives were carried out using time-resolved emission spectroscopy. The time-resolved emission data indicates that upon surface modification the majority of the deep trap states of ZrO(sub2) nanoparticles can be removed with the formation of some new shallower trap states in the band gap region.

Structure-activity relationship of the free-radical-scavenging reaction by vitamin E ([alpha]-, [beta]-, [gamma]-, [delta]-tocopherols) and ubiquinol- 10: pH dependence of the reaction rates
Article Abstract:
Stopped-flow spectrophotometer is used to measure the reaction rates of vitamin E ([alpha]-, [beta]-, [gamma]-, [delta]-tocopherols, TocH), ubiquinol-10 and related antioxidants (tocol, ubiquinol-0 and hydroquinone) with aroxyl (ArO) radical. The results have indicated that the [alpha]-tocopherol has higher activity than ubiquinol-10 in serum and inversely, that the latter has higher activity than the former in mitochondria of the tissue.

Radical scavenging and catalytic activity of metal-phenolic complexes
Article Abstract:
Pulse radiolysis studies reveals that the metal complexes of Mn(II)-, Fe(II)-, or Cu(II)- with phenolic antioxidants are able to undergo electron-transfer reactions. The study revealed that the rate constants for the scavenging of superoxide radical anions by the metal-phenol complexes are fairly comparable to those for natural superoxide dismutase (SOD) at near physiological pHs.
