Electron-transfer dynamics at GaAs surface quantum wells
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze interfacial electron-transfer dynamics associated with a heterogeneous semiconductor-liquid junction. Arsenic-capped gallium arsenide(100) surface quantum wells were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. A standard system supporting a synchronously pumped and acoustooptically cavity dumped dye laser was utilized to carry out time-correlated single-photon counting. Experimental results indicated that wave function overlap and also suggested that electronic mixing at surfaces should be extended to accomodate outer-sphere acceptors.

Diffractive optics-based heterodyne-detected grating spectroscopy: application to ultrafast protein dynamics
Article Abstract:
Grating studies of heme protein carboxymyoglobin are extended through the implementation of optical heterodyne detection using diffractive optics. When combined with polarization-selective methods, this technique allows the measurement of the anisotrocopic response of the protein in both phase and amplitude. This corresponds to changes in the imaginary and real components of the index of refraction. Protein structural changes are separated from electronic contributions by examining the anisotropy of both real and imaginary components.
