Energetics and population of molecules at microscopic liquid and solid surfaces

Article Abstract:

The surface chemistry of microscopic size centrosymmetric structures in centrosymmetric bulk media was investigated using second harmonic generation. Polymer beads in aqueous solution and oil droplets in an oil/water emulsion were examined for this purpose. In addition, the free energies of adsorption and the surface densities of organic molecules adsorbed from aqueous solution to one micrometer polystyrene bead surfaces and to 230 nm tetradecane oil droplet surfaces were calculated. The potential of second harmonic generation as a chemical and biochemical sensor without the need for a fluorescent or magnetic tag was discussed.

New method for determination of surface potential of microscopic particles by second harmonic generation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize a novel noninvasive technique for analyzing the surface electrostatic potential and surface charge density of microscopic particles using second harmonic generation. The polymer particles were spherical polystyrene microspheres distributed about a 1.05 plus/minus 0.03 micron diameter. Experimental results indicated that the surface potential correlated with theoretical predictions.

Absolute orientation of molecule at interfaces

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the absolute orientation of molecules at liquid interfaces by sum frequency generation is conducted. The method used in the study is based on measurement of the orientations of two nonparallel vibrationally active chromophores in the molecule of interest combined with a rotation matrix formulation to obtain the absolute molecular orientation.
