Fluorescence study of the sol-gel process in hybrid precursors: Evidence of concentration fluctuations at the local scale
Article Abstract:
Hybrid sol-gel materials are prepared by hydrolytic polycondensation of an alkoxysilane and the sol-gel process of methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTMS) is followed by fluorescence spectroscopy with 2-naphthol as a probe. The results show that this photoprobe is dramatically sensitive to the microenvironment polarity while spectroscopic studies reveal fluctuations of the maximum emission intensity and wavelength as a function of time.

Surface analysis by X-ray aphotoelectron spectroscopy of sol-gel silica modified with covalently bound peptides
Article Abstract:
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used for characterizing the surface chemistry of peptide modified sol-gel thin films based on different free peptide-silanes. The studies have shown that the different thicknesses and surface coverage are because of the local structure of the peptides.

Methane hydrate-ice equilibria in porous media
Article Abstract:
Equilibrium pressures for the dissociation of methane hydrate confined in silica gel pores of nominal radii 7.5, 5.0, 3.0, or 2.0 nm are reported. The result is suggestive of the observation that cos theta for the contact angle of the hydrate-ice interface silica gel is approximately zero.
