Interfacial Recombination Processes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells and Methods to Passive the Interfaces

Article Abstract:

Methods for passivating the interfaces make it possible to use kinetically fast redox couples in dye-sensitized solar cells, and they may facilitate the development of a viable solid-state version of these cells. We have characterized the two interfacial recombination reactions that take place between electrons in dye-sensitized solar cells and oxidized redox species in solution and have shown that because of these reactions, the photovoltaic effect tends to disappear when kinetically fast redox couples are employed.

Large increases in photocurrents and solar conversion efficiencies by UV illumination of dye sensitized solar cells

Article Abstract:

A method is presented by which the solar conversion efficiency of dye sensitized solar cells devices can be markedly improved by exposure to ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet treatment can be used to adjust the band edges for a photosensitizing dye with a poor injection yield.
